One of the most basic no-fault coverages in your automobile policy is your Personal Injury Protection (PIP). This covers you or any other person traveling in your vehicle for a minimum benefit per person for injuries, regardless who is at fault and this coverage may be optional. These benefits vary from state to state.

The following are types of coverages that may be extended to you under typical personal injury protection coverage:

1. Medical Expense Benefits. Hospital, medical, surgical, professional nursing, X-rays, ambulance, optometric, dental and prosthetic services are all included in you medical expense benefits.

2. Rehabilitation Expenses Benefit: Rehabilitation, psychiatric, physical and occupational therapy are all included in you rehabilitation expense benefits.

3. Work Loss Benefit: Lost wages for a specific limit up to a specific time period following injury are included in you rehabilitation expense benefits.

4. Funeral Expense Benefit: Included in this benefit are reasonable charges up to a specific amount for cremation expenses or funeral services including burial costs.

5. Survivors Loss Benefit: Included in this benefit are payment to your dependents or surviving spouse up to a specific limit for a specific time period.

It isn’t advised to drop your PIP coverage to get cheap car insurance even if your personal medical coverage will cover you during an accident. Your personal medical coverage may change regarding how you will be covered in an auto accident. If you aren’t aware of these changes or don’t notify your auto insurance company of these changes you will not have any coverage for medical expenses due to an auto accident.
